Abattoir PLC! ...............the place where markets, wholesalers and events all come together Abattoir is situated in Kuregem. By the end of the 18th Century, Kuregem had become a typical rural setting, encircled by windmills, artisan breweries and wool and textile workshops. There was water there, and it was abundant. In 1890 a new abattoir and livestock market was built in Kuregem. The local authority in the district of Anderlecht granted the concession to the Abattoir & Market Company of Anderlecht-Cureghem. The Great Market Hall, a whole steel construction is supported by cast-iron pillars each separated by 10m from the other. The foundations go very deep because of the marshland underneath and are underpinned by barrel vaults of brick. These cellars under the covered market are a jewel in the crown of 19th Century industrial architecture.
