African Arts Institute

The mission of the African Arts Institute (AFAI) is to harness relevant -especially South Africa- expertise, resources, infrastructure, markets, knowledge and information to help develop and sustain creative practice in Africa, and the protection and promotion of the continents cultural heritage and assets in line with our vision. AFAI was launched in February 2009 with a grant from Spier to establish an entity that would work in the creative sector across the continent and house the secretariat of the Arterial Network, a continent-wide body dedicated to advancing the African creative sector. Its vision is for a vibrant, dynamic and sustainable African creative sector that contributes to development, human rights and democracy on the continent, and projects African aesthetics and intellectual content into the international arena.
