The primary aluminum industry emits 1.1 gigatons of greenhouse gases (GHG) in a single year and consumes more than 900 TWh of electricity. If primary aluminum were a country, it would be the worlds fifth-largest consumer of electricity. Along with CO2, primary aluminum production also releases millions of tons of perfluorocarbon GHG gases, sulfur dioxide, nitrous oxides and volatile chemicals. Additionally, each year, refining alumina for smelters results in 175 million tons of caustic red mud waste so toxic that must be permanently stored.
