Today in the United States, considerable effort and capital are being expended to develop and produce domestic energy resources to meet the energy demands for our country. Due to the instability of the oil and gas industry abroad, companies in America are continually working to make our nation more energy self-reliant. Natural gas and coal bed natural gas (CBNG) production in the Rocky Mountain Region are two sources receiving significant attention that will help meet future energy demand. To extract 1000 cubic feet (1 MCF) of CBNG, between 3 and 8 barrels (at 42 gallons per barrel) of water byproduct are also generated, depending upon the region. Existing CBNG wells produce over 1.4 billion barrels of water each year, and with planned CBNG development, the Wyoming State Engineers office has estimated that 8 trillion gallons of CBNG produced water could be generated just in Wyoming.
