Indias logistics cost is estimated to account somewhere between 13-14 per cent of the GDP. This compares poorly with the cost of 7-8 per cent for developed economies. Why does it matter? Because this overhead cost accumulates at each and every leg of logistics supply chain, making the cost of manufacturing uncompetitive not only in export market but even in domestic market. Logistics lays at the heart of an economy. Its akin to blood flowing in the veins of our body. If India wants to harness its full potential, it needs to minimize the logistics cost. But why is it this high? One of the fundamental reason being 70% of the logistics happens through road transportation. Road transportation is costly, inefficient and polluting.
