In 2011, CHI Health Care opened its doors in a bold non-profit initiative to create a new model of primary care that was holistic, collaborative, and accessible to a wide range of income levels. CHI prioritized taking commercial insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, and using a sliding fee scale. A key part of the business plan relied on insurance payment reforms that were just starting to emerge, known now as value based care. Healthcare has traditionally used a fee for service payment structure that pays for treatment only after you get sick. Value based payments are different because they compensate providers to get people healthy and then keep them healthy. And this is what CHI Health Care became successful at, fostering health.
