Christian Moerlein Brewing Company

Christian Moerlein founded his brewing company in Cincinnatis Over-the-Rhine neighborhood in 1853 with the goal of making the better beers he was missing from his former home in Germany. Within a few years, he had the largest brewery in Ohio. Though the company didnt survive Prohibition, the Christian Moerlein Brewing Co. remained legendary in the Ohio Valley Region. The Christian Moerlein Brewing Company was resurrected as a better beer in 1981 and has been a leader in the craft beer movement since that time. The Christian Moerlein Select Lager became the first American beer to certifiably pass the strict Reinheitsgebot, or Bavarian Purity Law of 1516. Today, Christian Moerlein operates in Cincinnatis historic Kaufaman Brewery, just blocks from where it was founded, in Over-the-Rhine.
