In Matthew chapter 16, Jesus promised to build His church on the rock...the foundation that He is the Christ, the Son of the living God. After Jesus ascension into heaven in ~AD 33, in Acts chapter 2 the Bible describes the first gospel sermon that Peter delivered to the crowds gathered in Jerusalem. At the end of Peters message, as recorded in Acts chapter 2, the crowd was cut to the heart, and asked what they must do to be saved. In Acts 2:38-40, Peter said: Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the LORD our God shall call.
