College Historical Society (The Hist), Trinity College Dublin

The College Historical Society, known as the Hist, was founded in 1770 by Edmund Burke and stands as the oldest student society in the world. Since its inception, the Hist has been at the forefront of political discourse in Ireland and a platform for speakers of great renown. Today we maintain our position as a leader in discourse, debate, and oratory and have grown to become leaders in a number of new areas, including competitive debating and schools debating. Boasting over 10,000 members, the Society hosts a range of weekly events all under our chief mission to promote and facilitate discourse. Our weekly chamber debates, and other events that are regularly attended by large numbers of students all keen to broaden their horizons and interrogate the world around them as young adults.
