Commonwealth Home Fashions was founded in 1946 by brothers Myer, Jack, Morris, Philip, and Saul Levenson. They named the company after the Royal Canadian Air Forces Commonwealth Flying Squadron, where Saul served during World War II. At the time, it was called the Commonwealth Curtain Company, one of many department stores in Canada. Commonwealth has experienced many changes over seven decades. It operated two factories in England from 1957 to 1981. In the late 1970s, it acquired Richmark International of Boston and amalgamated the company into Commonwealth in 1995.
