Community Action Inc of Central Texas

Community Action, Inc. of Central Texas (CAI) is a community based not for profit organization that has been in continuous operation since 1965 when it was established as part of this nations War On Poverty led by President Lyndon Baines Johnson. CAI operated its first Head Start program (one of the first in the nation) in the community of Kyle in Hays County in the summer of that year. Since that time it has grown into a large integrated health, education, and human services agency that provides a multitude of services across ten counties in the rural capital area of Texas. It now operates 13 Head Start and Early Head Start centers in Hays and Caldwell counties. In 1968, CAI began providing reproductive health services to low income women in Hays County. By 1974, it was providing these services to low income women in eight counties in the rural capital area.
