CREA was founded in 2013 in response to the urgent literacy needs of a recent wave of immigrants to East Harlem from Mexico, Central and South American, and the Caribbean. Our core mission is to break through the cycle of poverty of Spanish and indigenous speaking illiterate or minimally educated adult immigrants in the East Harlem community through educational classes, life skills building workshops and other activities. Its staff seeks to help students, who are primarily women, improve their lives here in New York City
