The European Union (EU) is a unique economic and political partnership between 27 democratic European countries that are working together to improve the lives of their citizens. It has delivered half a century of peace, stability and prosperity, helped raise living standards, and is progressively building a single Europe-wide market in which people, goods, services and capital move among Member States as freely as within a country. With more than 500 million inhabitants, which account for one quarter of the worlds gross domestic product (GDP) and one fifth of worldwide trade, the EU is a global player.
