Hazelwoods has been in the gift shop business since 1976 when Rich Hazelwood opened his first shop in Phoenix, AZ. During this expansive and successful time, we launched more than 100 stores and operated them across the country. In the spring of 2000, 70 of the 75 properties were sold to WH Smith. We continued to operate a small number of shops while expanding into other businesses. In the second quarter of 2004, when our non-compete clause expired, we once again started doing what Rich loves to do: fluidly operate hotel and resort gift shops. As many hotels have discovered, operating a gift shop in-house can be an overwhelming undertaking. There are so many expectations and requirements such as, expenses, expertly-trained retail staffs, store fixtures, and inventory challenges.
