Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS)

The Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS) (Greek: ()) is the Greek Federation of Classical Sports. It was founded in 1897 under the name SEAGS. It was founded during the reign of George I in 1897, before the beginning of the Greek-Turkish war of 1897, as a necessity for a more complete organisation of the then Greek sports clubs, following the First Olympic Games held in Athens the previous year. As the leading sporting body of 28 original clubs, SEGAS linked its history with the history of Greek sport in the modern era. Today it has 500 sports clubs and about 30,000 athletes. It was the first Federation to be founded in Greece and, since its foundation and for many decades, it has cultivated all the sports (football, basketball, volleyball, swimming, tennis, fencing, cycling, gymnastics, wrestling, boxing, equestrianism, shooting, judo, handball, etc.) that subsequently acquired independent federations.
