The New International Airport of Heraklion in Kasteli area is to replace the existing Nikos Kazantzakis Airport and will be constructed according to a set of technical and operational specifications to meet current and future transportation needs throughout the concession period. It will be Greeces second busiest airport. The new airport will have a new 3200m runway parallel to the existing one and will be operational in less than 4 years (2027). The tender for the construction and management of the airport was awarded to Ariadne Airport Group, comprising of GEK TERNA and GMR Infrastructure.
