Idaho Geological Survey

The Idaho Geological Survey (IGS) is the lead state agency for the collection, interpretation, and dissemination of geologic and mineral resource data for Idaho. The agency has served the state since 1919 and prior to 1984 was named the Idaho Bureau of Mines and Geology. The IGS is a non-regulatory state agency that is administered as a Special Program of the University of Idaho. In addition to the main office on University of Idahos Moscow campus, the Survey has a branch office in Boise located at the Idaho Water Center. The agency is staffed by approximately 12 state-funded, full-time employees and 15 externally-funded, temporary and part-time employees. The Surveys goal is to provide the state with timely and relevant geologic information and applied research, effective program accomplishments, and transparent access to the general public.
