The trade involves working both at great heights and underground. We work indoors and outdoors, summer and winter therefore an ironworker must endure the heat of the summer as well as the cold in the winter. An ironworker must be physically fit and may be required to carry loads of 100 lbs. while walking over rough and uneven terrain. On the other end of the spectrum, an ironworker must have the patience to install delicate balcony rail or erect a complicated window wall system. Structural Ironworkers erect the steel framework of bridges, buildings, towers and other structures including metal storage tanks and overhead crane runways. They also install steel decking and do all types of welding operations. Ornamental Ironworkers install metal stairways, catwalks, floor-gratings, hand rail, metal ladders, metal window sash and doors, grills, screens and bank equipment.
