We are a profit-for-purpose, social enterprise seeking to address the issue of waste management in Small Island Developing States utilizing a Circular Economy framework to develop innovative and sustainable solutions through public & private partnerships. jua kali Ltd. (pronounced ju-wah kah-lee) evolved out of Masters level research in 2011, investigating the feasibility of establishing a Resource Recovery programme in an urban poor community in Saint Lucia, as a means of addressing the lack/inadequate solid waste management services. In many developing countries, the poor see waste as a resource and re-purpose the scraped material to produce goods that they may sell or use themselves, thereby creating sustainable livelihoods. These informal artisans who have established entire ecosystems from scrap sourcing to repair are known as jua kali in Kenya, Catadores in Brazil, and the Zabbaleen in Egypt (to name a few).
