Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital

In 1931, Smt Kamala Nehru started a dispensary in Swaraj Bhavan to treat freedom fighters and their families. In 1936, Kamala Nehru, frail in health but indomitable in spirit, continued her philanthropic work and expressed her desire to Gandhiji to give this endeavour a permanent shape after her demise. In 1937, the Kamala Nehru Memorial Society was formed and registered under the Society Registration Act of 1860 as a Not-for-Profit Charitable Society. In 1939, Mahatma Gandhiji laid the foundation of the hospital. In 1941, Gandhiji inaugurated the hospital on 28 February 1941, thus Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital came into existence as a 40-bed hospital for Obs & Gynae. In 1959, a cancer facility was added in a new block cherished as Begun Abul Kalam Azad, inaugurated by the then Vice President of India.
