Kangaroo Island Council

Kangaroo Island is Australias third largest island, located 13.5 kilometres from the Australian mainland at its closest point. It encompasses an area of 4,400 square kilometres and has a resident population of approximately 4,500. The Council is responsible for the management of 1,100 kilometres of unsealed roads and 250 kilometres of sealed roads. Over 200,000 people visit the island each year, which is steadily increasing. Our economy is 65% agriculture and 30% tourism. The Island is currently rebuilding and renewing one third of the island devastated by the Black Summer bushfires and the adverse impacts of COVID-19. Our Council of Elected Members comprises the Mayor and nine councillors. Kangaroo Island Council was formed in 1996 following the amalgamation of the District Councils of Kingscote and Dudley.
