Kirkuk International Airport

Kirkuk Airport was established in 1951 AD and was named the Freedom Military Base. At the beginning of the Iran-Iraq War, Al-Hurriya was the main airbase used by the newly purchased Mirage F-1s. It was bombed during Operation Sultan 10 in 1980 in the first phase of the wa Kirkuk Regional Air Base was inhabit to the 506th Air Reconnaissance Group. The group maintained base security, conducted safe flight operations, and actively supported base agencies in support of Operation of Iraqi Freedom, Operation New Dawn, and other contingency plans for Central Air Force and U.S. Central Command. Since 2003 it has been used by the US Air Force as a military airport. and was returned to the Iraqi army in November 2011. In 2012, the Iraqi Ministry of Transport decided to transfer the military section to another location, which is a prerequisite for converting the airbase into a civilian airport.
