Our firm has had a multimodal focus from the beginning. We were founded on the second floor of Portlands Union Station in 1983 by Tom Lancaster, a train enthusiast who would go on to become one of the nations leading experts in at-grade rail crossings and mitigating transit-auto conflicts. Through most of its history under Tom, the firm consisted of two to three staff members who worked primarily on traditional traffic engineering projects like traffic impact studies and signal designs.
