Independent Living is attained by exerting control over ones life, based on acceptable options that minimize reliance on others in the decision making process and in performing daily activities. Managing individual affairs, participating in community life, fulfilling a range of social roles, making choices that lead to self-determination and minimizing psychological and physical dependence on others are all elements that contribute to reaching the goal of Independent Living. LICIL was born out of the Independent Living Movement which took root in the 1960s and 1970s. A social philosophy that emphasizes personal responsibility in life, the Independent Living concept also affirms that environmental hurdles and outdated public opinions are the barriers that have long inhibited much needed service provisions for individuals with disabilities.
