Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence

Founded in 1956, the Nassau County Committee on Alcoholism (today known as LICADD) was an organization whose mission was to educate the general public on the nature of alcoholism and to provide a liaison to therapeutic treatment for alcoholics and their families. Founded by R. Brinkley Brink Smithers, a wealthy philanthropist who got sober himself in 1954, the Smithers family (through the Christopher D. Smithers Foundation) remains a vital supporter of LICADD and the mission. Today, LICADDs mission is to address the addictive climate of our times by providing initial attention and referral services to individuals, families, and children, through intervention, education, and professional guidance, to overcome the ravages of alcohol and other drug-related problems.
