300,000 newcomers arrive in Canada each year; unemployment and underemployment are among the largest challenges faced by those transitioning to Canada. According to Statistics Canada, African-born immigrants have the lowest employment rate and the highest unemployment rate of all immigrant groups. These rate differentials are most drastic when comparing them to Canadian-born citizens. The lack of recognition of previous work experience and education by employers limits newcomers ability to secure adequate jobs. Most newcomers move here for the promise of a better life but face immense challenges securing jobs matching their skill level, leaving them feeling undervalued.
