MathMoms NPC

MathMoms is a womens initiative powered by nurturing love that builds confident communities one maths empowered child at a time. We have three overarching aims: (i) improving the academic results of foundation phase learners; (ii) employing and training unemployed women; and (iii) creating safe spaces with healthy, continuous relationships, thereby healing trauma and building resilient communities. MathMoms was founded in response to challenges faced by our communities - gangsterism, unemployment - and the desire to tell a different kind of story - one of hope, of communities that care. We achieve our aims through weekly training sessions (for the women), and teaching Grade 2-4 learners maths and literacy skills in extra lessons. From a small beginning in 2016, when we piloted our programme at a school in Elsies River, weve grown to 17 schools with 12 Mentors, 53 MathMoms, 25 interns and an estimated 1000 learners in 2020.
