MicroMed Cardiovascular, Inc. is medical device company dedicated to carrying on the work and innovation of famed heart surgeon Dr. Michael E. DeBakey. Since its inception in 1998, the company has been a pioneer in the rapidly accelerating field of Mechanical Circulatory Support. MicroMed manufactures a small implantable electric pump designed to increase the cardiac output of a patient with a failing heart. This medical device is known as a VAD or Ventricular Assist Device and sold worldwide. The DeBakey VAD and its related technology were developed in an exclusive partnership with NASA, Dr. Michael E. DeBakey and Dr. George Noon. It is a small powerful device, weighing 92 grams implanted in the pericardial space next to the heart. The device was awarded NASAs invention of the year and is included in the Space Technology Hall of Fame.
