National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit

The National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit (NPEU) is a multidisciplinary research team dedicated to improving the care provided to women and their families during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period, as well as the care provided to the newborn. Our aim is to conduct research with a view to providing information that can improve the health and welfare of babies, mothers and their families and promote the effective use of resources in the perinatal health services. We achieve this by undertaking a broad range of clinical research using a variety of methods. For example, when investigating the impact of a new or existing treatment, we will usually use a randomised controlled trial. However, if we want to look at womens views about their maternity care, we will use a survey design or a qualitative study. The NPEUs funding is provided from a variety of sources.
