Nirmaan Society

Nirmaan Society works toward the social and economic development of marginalized mother-tongue communities of India. Developing their mother tongue helps to preserve their cultural heritage and identity. Growing their means for livelihood through agriculture helps to restore their dignity and capacity to grow. Focus on the mother tongue includes developing and digitalizing dictionaries and websites, organizing adult literacy programs, and publishing literature, all using the mother tongue. The livelihood program includes promoting organic/natural farming, developing community-based farmer organizations, and opening avenues for marketing farm products. Through building their capacities, these indigenous communities are able to overcome multiple barriers, participate in the formal economy, and enjoy access to education, justice, and the ability to decide for themselves. Since 2008, Nirmaan has worked with over 20 mother tongue communities spread across 5 states of India
