Sunday Times State Secondary School of the Year 2020. Pates is a selective state school which was established over 400 years ago to provide free education to the people of Cheltenham and surrounding areas. Students here achieve the highest academic standards whilst also benefitting from exceptional pastoral care and first-class facilities. We are proud of our inheritance but at the same time very much focused on the future. Pates is consistently among the most successful state grammar schools in the country, and this years crop of examination results are among the very best it has ever produced.
