Policia Militar do Estado do Amazonas

The Military Police of Amazonas (PMAM) has a rich and varied history that began in Brazils colonial period and has undergone numerous transformations up to the present day. The PMAM originated as the Police Guard in 1837, established by the President of the Province of Grao-Para, General Soares de Andrea, with the mission of combating the Cabanos revolt. Initially, it comprised 1,339 men under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Albino dos Santos Pereira. Over the years, the name and structure of the force have changed. In 1887, Law No. 761 reorganized the Police Corps of Amazonas. After the proclamation of the Republic in 1889, the Police Corps was dissolved and replaced by the Security Military Battalion through Decree No. 11 of 1890. The force was then called the State Military Regiment and Military Battalion. In 1935, Law No. 55 reestablished the State Police Force, which finally, in 1938, became the Military Police of Amazonas.
