The dream of adding value to agroforestry crops began when Matthew Falkiner and Eric Poncon met for the first time at a coffee specialty convention in Philadelphia. Falkiner was presenting handcrafts made with coffee wood and Eric as an executive of an international coffee-trading group. It was here when Matthew, an architect and furniture designer, decided to go into business with the Poncon family led by agronomist Clement-Marie and Eric Poncon, who had already started a forestry project in which they set out to plant 2,000 hectares of noble wood species in Nicaragua. The company became official in 2000, when the Poncon family and Matthew Falkiner opened a showroom in Managua, which gave birth to Simplemente Madera Group as a production platform for sustainable design and manufacturing strategies using natural, renewable and certified materials.
