Slussers Green Thumb, Inc., began in 1965 as a hobby. Cecilia Slusser was spending her spare time and weekends developing greenhouses because she loved growing and caring for plants. Cecilia along with her husband Tom Slusser, was operating a garden store, nursery, as well as a landscaping and lawn maintenance company by the turn of the decade. It was in 1976 when Samuel C. Gray, a pioneer in the seeding and sodding industry, approached the Slusser family about taking over his business. Sam Gray wanted to retire, but was determined to see his business carry on and had built a trusting relationship with the Slusser family. The Slusser family agreed and Slussers Green Thumb as its known today, began. Over time the retail garden and residential landscaping aspects of the business gave way to the full-service Commercial, Municipality, and Highway Seeding/Sodding operations.
