Spike Island, Cork Harbour

Spike Island is a heritage island and national monument off the coast of Cobh, under the ownership of Cork County Council. At one time or another in its rich 1300 year history, Spike island has been a monastery, prison, fortress and island home. The island is most famous of its 4 prisons spread across 400 years from the 1600s until 2004. The 1850s Victorian prison became so large it was the biggest in the world. The 104 acre site is dominated by the impressive Fort Mitchel, one of the worlds largest star shaped forts at 24 acres that is over 200 years old. Major investment in recent years from owners Cork County Council and part funding by Failte Ireland has seen the site develop into a major international tourist attraction, employing up to 50 staff. The islands rich history is told by guided tours that start with a short ferry ride from Cobh, with audio guides also available. Each visitor receives a free map and app to help them explore.
