Father Colm Conlon was appointed the first pastor. The parish was placed under the patronage of St. John Neumann, the first male canonized saint from the United States, who was canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1976. It was most fitting that our parish is named after Bishop John Neumann, since the first parish in Irvine, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, was named for Americas first native saint. The first masses were celebrated in the gymnasium of Irvine High School and in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Ground breaking for the new church took place on June 15, 1980.
