The Indian Gymkhana Club

Indian Gymkhana began in 1916 as a sports club for Indians, at this time mainly young Princes and Maharajahs, living in London. Lord Hawke, former England captain and President of the Marylebone Cricket Club was the first Chairman and President. In 1922, thanks to donations from some of the most illustrious families in India, including the Maharajas of Patiala, Kapurthala, Jhalawar and Cooch Behar, Indian Gymkhana officially opened its own 15-acre site in Osterley to play cricket, hockey, football and tennis. Indian Gymkhana proudly adheres to the original aims of its founders, which is to promote sport and the positive effect it has on participants of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. Today, we feel proud to say that Indian Gymkhana is the oldest and largest multi-racial sports club in the United Kingdom.
