The Sutter Club

The Sutter Club, founded in 1889, is the second oldest private club in the state of California. Its colorful history began when Sacramento was still little more than a river-dependent town best known as the chief outfitting headquarters for waves of gold-crazed vagabonds and sharpies. The Club moved to its present location in 1930 and has been the site of an endless variety of social gatherings. The building was designed by local architect Charles Dean and is a striking example of early California mission style architecture. It is located in downtown Sacramento, across the street from the State Capitol. There are several fine hotels in the area, including the Sheraton Grand Hotel, the Citizen Hotel, the Embassy Suites, and the Hyatt Regency, all within an easy walking distance from the Club.
