January 24 1972, Pak Liem Tiong Sien (Pak Lumy), together with Pak Sudarmo and his friends agreed to establish an official forum to help street and homeless children have a better future. Initially, KDM was a night school for street children and homeless people in a small hut close to Pasar Senen Train Station, Central Jakarta. The name Diakoneia Modern Campus was chosen because it is significant to its main purpose. The word campus means a place to develop mentally, a mindset, or a place to study. The word Diakoneia comes from Greek, referring to selfless service to those who need help. While the word Modern means an outlook on changing people, preparing them for a better future, it also means continuous improvement. 50 years later, KDM has become a growing institution, adaptive to changing times, but still upholding the noble values of its founders.
